My goodness, what a wonderfully eccentric person! I love how this book was like, I built a cabin the woods, then I won three Grammys, then I went fishing and oh by the way I hang out with Joni Mitchell all the time。 I enjoyed this。

I mean I was obviously always going to give this five stars bc of my deep, unfailing love for Brandi。 But it really, truly does deserve it。 She's quite a writer, it turns out。 Which surprises me not even a little。 I mean I was obviously always going to give this five stars bc of my deep, unfailing love for Brandi。 But it really, truly does deserve it。 She's quite a writer, it turns out。 Which surprises me not even a little。 。。。more

Well-written memoir, insightful, frank, funny, touching, and an interesting story of a very talented young woman。 With a book like this, you expect to be intrigued by all the references to the famous people that the artist knows, and those parts were very good, but her personal life and humble upbringings were every much as interesting。 A really good book。

I laughed, I cried, I felt uplifted。 In recommending the book to a friend, I noted that the rollercoaster of emotions I felt reading this book were was not unlike attending a Brandi show。 I've been following her music since I first saw her open for Jamie Cullum in 2006 (see page 130。。。 we were at the DC show in March just after the huge snow storm of February that year), and the book was such an incredible look behind her music。 As someone who knows her music intimately, I would, of course, have I laughed, I cried, I felt uplifted。 In recommending the book to a friend, I noted that the rollercoaster of emotions I felt reading this book were was not unlike attending a Brandi show。 I've been following her music since I first saw her open for Jamie Cullum in 2006 (see page 130。。。 we were at the DC show in March just after the huge snow storm of February that year), and the book was such an incredible look behind her music。 As someone who knows her music intimately, I would, of course, have loved to hear even more about the music writing/recording/touring process (it's in there, just not center-stage, so to speak), but there was so much realness, it's hard to even complain about that。 My one actual criticism is I wish there were more dates included。 It would go pages without listing what month/year we were in, and even though it was in mostly chronological order, I found myself cross-referencing the story in the book with shows I'd seen, or details I could dig up online。 Do yourself a favor and read the book! 。。。more

I’ve loved Brandi Carlile since I saw her as an opening act nearly 15 years ago so chances were good that I would also love this memoir。 She is a woman that inspires me with her passion for her music, her family, her band family, the woods of WA, and her non profit。 If you don’t know her music, start listening now! Speaking of listening, I can’t wait to reread this as an audiobook since Brandi narrates and sings all the songs that she has lyrics for in the book。

As you might expect from this talented and scrappy artist, Brandi Carlile brings an intense honesty to her memoir。 Her journey up to this point is dependent on her raw talent, her devotion to special friendships and a deep dependence on family。 She knows herself very thoroughly, but only after lots of trials and errors。 Song lyrics accompany the chapters that have inspired them, and lots of photos keep things personal。 Music lovers will enjoy the stories of famous musical artists and envy her ci As you might expect from this talented and scrappy artist, Brandi Carlile brings an intense honesty to her memoir。 Her journey up to this point is dependent on her raw talent, her devotion to special friendships and a deep dependence on family。 She knows herself very thoroughly, but only after lots of trials and errors。 Song lyrics accompany the chapters that have inspired them, and lots of photos keep things personal。 Music lovers will enjoy the stories of famous musical artists and envy her circle of friends。 。。。more

I'm still kind of reeling。 Maybe I'll write a more full review later。 I can't express adequately how beautiful, powerful, and moving I found this to be。 I have always admired Brandi for her artistry and musicianship, but this made me respect her in an entirely new light。 I truly didn't want it to end。 I'm still kind of reeling。 Maybe I'll write a more full review later。 I can't express adequately how beautiful, powerful, and moving I found this to be。 I have always admired Brandi for her artistry and musicianship, but this made me respect her in an entirely new light。 I truly didn't want it to end。 。。。more

Well, I tore through this one。 I love Brandi Carlile's music and my wife and I have been playing her on repeat since the start of the year。 We dance to “I Belong to You” in the kitchen, I attempt to play “The Joke” on the guitar (attempt being the key word。。。), and we sing “The Mother” with Josie。 I loved hearing Brandi’s story, I loved learning the meaning behind so many of the songs, and ALLLLL the pictures。 This book was so thoughtful and put together so well。 And, I loved reading the story o Well, I tore through this one。 I love Brandi Carlile's music and my wife and I have been playing her on repeat since the start of the year。 We dance to “I Belong to You” in the kitchen, I attempt to play “The Joke” on the guitar (attempt being the key word。。。), and we sing “The Mother” with Josie。 I loved hearing Brandi’s story, I loved learning the meaning behind so many of the songs, and ALLLLL the pictures。 This book was so thoughtful and put together so well。 And, I loved reading the story of a woman and her wife and their relationship and their family。 We need more of those。 。。。more

As much as I enjoy Brandi's music, reading her memoir made me an even bigger fan! Her spirit and courage shine through and her story provides deeper meaning to her songs/lyrics。 I am drawn to reading memoirs because I feel they enhance empathy, creativity and insight by providing an opportunity to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes"。 I am inspired by Brandi's resilience, love of family, talent and devotion to helping others。 As much as I enjoy Brandi's music, reading her memoir made me an even bigger fan! Brandi Carlile's music has touched me and has been my touchstone through many parts of my life。 Her words are magical and she has taken that magic and written her memoir。 Brandi takes us through her life beginning as a very sick 4 year old to her Grammy winning song The Joke。 Very heartwarming and inspirational!! To be transparent, I would give 5 stars as a review of Brandi reading the phone book! That said, this was a phenomenal memoir, from someone who doesn't tend to like memoirs all that much。 I first fell in love with Brandi for many reasons (albeit begrudgingly, as she was recommended to me by my ex, who heard of her from her new girlfriend。。。ahh, lesbians!)。 The most notable draw for me though was the way her voice and lyrics drip with raw, authentic emotion。 She is the absolute queen of this。 As To be transparent, I would give 5 stars as a review of Brandi reading the phone book! Broken Horses - an Amazing MemoirWow, what an amazing memoir! I didn’t even know there was a Brandi Carlile until I saw Benicio Bryant sing The Joke on America’s Got Talent。 Haunted by the words and melody, I jumped on YouTube and found a singer whose songs put a mirror to my face while reminding me of our collective humanity。 I wondered what inspired the music。 Then came Broken Horses。 Like her songs, Brandi’s memoir unabashedly reflects her humanity and like The Story, tells “how I got to wher Broken Horses - an Amazing MemoirWow, what an amazing memoir! Brandi Carlile has been the soundtrack of my life the past few years and this was everything I hoped it would be。 Found myself consistently in tears throughout the whole book。 Grateful for everything she puts into this world。

I may be a tad biased, but this is one of the best and most honest memoirs I have ever read。

I've been a fan of carlile's since discovering her upon moving to the west coast in 2006。 If you're already a fan, this humble account of her life will make you a bigger one。 Now I just want Brandi in my family。 I had no idea she was such a renegade scrapper and party animal。 And if you're not a fan, well most of me wants to bribe that this just might make you one。 I've been a fan of carlile's since discovering her upon moving to the west coast in 2006。 If you're already a fan, this humble account of her life will make you a bigger one。 Now I just want Brandi in my family。 I had no idea she was such a renegade scrapper and party animal。 And if you're not a fan, well most of me wants to bribe that this just might make you one。 。。。more

I absolutely loved learning about Brandi Carlile’s life。 I have loved her music for many years and this intimate, behind-the-scenes story made me love her even more, which I can’t believe is actually possible。 I am so proud of this beautiful human being, which is possibly a very weird thing to feel, but I am。 Just blown away。

I absolutely loved this book, and it's one of the best memoirs I've read in a long time。 Brandi does a good job of telling the story of her life in a way that makes you think about your own。 In particular, the components of religious trauma were all too real, and she's perhaps done a better job of forgiving those involved in hers than I have in mine。I also loved reading about how she's been able to create a community at her "Carlile Compound"。 I think it's something many of us would have loved t I absolutely loved this book, and it's one of the best memoirs I've read in a long time。 Brandi does a good job of telling the story of her life in a way that makes you think about your own。 In particular, the components of religious trauma were all too real, and she's perhaps done a better job of forgiving those involved in hers than I have in mine。I also loved reading about how she's been able to create a community at her "Carlile Compound"。 I think it's something many of us would have loved to have over the past year and it was a nice glimpse into what seems like a great family / friend group。Finally, the stories she has with so many musical icons - from Elton John to Joni Mitchell to Dolly Parton are incredible and so fun to hear about。This is a great book for: anyone who loves music, anyone who isn't sure about their faith journey and anyone who's really needed a friend over the past year。 。。。more

I do not typically enjoy memoirs or autobiographies of any kind。 I enjoy the beginning, when they talk about their childhood (is it any wonder I work with kids?), but when they get to the part about their career I find it so dull I rarely finish them。 I love Brandi Carlile。 I have felt a deep connection to her since the first time I heard her voice that goes far beyond our shared name。 Her music is so raw and real that you feel like you know her。 This book is the same。 It is real, emotional, and I do not typically enjoy memoirs or autobiographies of any kind。 I enjoy the beginning, when they talk about their childhood (is it any wonder I work with kids?), but when they get to the part about their career I find it so dull I rarely finish them。 I love Brandi Carlile。 I have felt a deep connection to her since the first time I heard her voice that goes far beyond our shared name。 Her music is so raw and real that you feel like you know her。 This book is the same。 It is real, emotional, and truly Brandi。 And I loved every second of it。 。。。more
